Traditional painting is the genre that pays attention to the daily life of the author contemporary popular and bourgeois classes, which are usually represented in festive, domestic, work or religious scenes, whether in a country setting or at workshops.
In Spain, during the nineteenth century, two important centers of this painting genre were developed in Seville and Madrid , which gave an exotic and idealized view of Andalusian and Madrid´s culture. Later, the school from Madrid opted for a more realistic representation consistent with the situation at the moment.
The forerunners of the costumbrist genre in Spain were Juan Rodriguez and Jimenez (1765-1830), with his artwork El Panadero, who also created small paintings of picturesque subjects, which started the Romantic genre, and on the other side, Joaquín Manuel Fernández Cruzado (1781-1856 ).
The pictorial current initiated by these two Spanish painters was continued by the school of Seville (which included Jose Dominguez Becquer (1805-1841) and Antonio Cabral Bejarano (1788-1861)), in which the foreign influence played a very important role due to the influx of romantic travelers of the time, and thanks to the interest generated in England and other European countries fo Spain as an exotic and picturesque destination.
Other famous painters who belong to this current were José Roldán (1808-1871), influenced by Murillo, as he favored the subject of children and urchins, as well as Murillo´s technique, and Joaquin Dominguez Becquer (1817-1879), who painted one of the most famous costumbrist painting : Vista de Sevilla desde la Cruz del Campo.
